President’s Welcome
First let me wish our new and returning athletes and their families a happy and warm welcome to the new season at the Casey Little Athletics Centre. To the new members I hope you find us a friendly and welcoming Centre. Please feel free to ask questions and approach myself or other committee members for assistance and advice.
Being my first year as President I’ve been going through a steep learning curve as have many of our new committee members. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank both our new and existing members of the 2011-12 committee for committing to running the Centre for the next twelve months. It’s been a busy period since our AGM back in May.
- We had another successful Cross Country season over the winter months.
- We have been successful in gaining a $25,000 Minor Works grant from the City of Casey to upgrade our Discus cages and have a concrete disabled access path built from the car park to our clubrooms.
- We have launched new Sponsorship packages which at this early stage are proving very successful and will help fund new equipment and facilities for our young athletes.
- We also won the Gippsland Centre of the Year at the Little Athletics Victoria Gala Awards in July.
Like many sporting activities we require parent help each week to assist with running our programs. This obviously can not be done by committee members alone as there are just not enough of us to go round. I therefore urge all parents to get involved with your kids and come out and learn about athletics and, most importantly, enjoy assisting and developing some young people of our community.
We are also looking for new coaches to help train and teach those children who wish to develop their skills. You don’t need experience to start with; we have experienced coaches who you can learn from as well as coaching courses through out the year to develop your own knowledge and skills. Please see Paul Olsson, Rod Prime, Shane Triffitt, Felicity Stark or myself if you are interested.
In closing, I’d like to note that while we are a large and successful Little Athletics Centre with over 60 athletes competing at last seasons State Track and Field Championships, we need to remember that we are also here to provide a fun environment for another 400 young athletes who want to come down and have a run, a jump or a throw and most importantly some fun on a Saturday morning. So please help us promote the LAVic values of “Family, Fun and Fitness”.
Have a great year.Peter Hughes
